Curtis_Cooper_Maureen_rgb_400x500Maureen Curtis Cooper, BSN, RN, CEN, CPEN, FAEN, serves on the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) Board of Directors. ENA is the specialty nursing association serving the emergency nursing profession through research, publications, professional development, and emphasis on quality and patient safety.

Curtis Cooper received a bachelor’s in nursing cum laude from Boston College in 1974. She began her nursing career as a staff registered nurse working with school age and adolescent patients in a suburban pediatric hospital. She quickly moved to a leadership role as head nurse of an infant and toddlers unit at Boston City Hospital, an inner city teaching hospital, located in Boston, MA.

After four years, Curtis Cooper transferred to the pediatric emergency department and found her calling as an emergency nurse for the next 33 years. As a registered nurse, Curtis Cooper has experience in pediatric emergency care, pediatric emergency nurse education, and legal consulting. She is the 2010 recipient of the Karen O’Neil Professionalism Award for devotion and dedication to emergency nursing and ENA. She is currently an independent emergency nurse educator.

At her very first ENA Boston Chapter meeting Curtis Cooper was elected chapter Secretary. In 1988, Boston hosted the ENA Annual Scientific Assembly. From that meeting on, Curtis Cooper was hooked to a lifelong involvement with ENA. In the early 1990s, Curtis Cooper was in the first ENPC instructor class, bringing ENPC to Massachusetts. A few years later she bridged to TNCC instructor status. As faculty for both courses, she has taught more than 100 courses, including courses in Bermuda and Saudi Arabia. She has served on the Massachusetts ENA Pediatric Committee since the early days of ENPC. As Chair, she was awarded two EMSC grants to cover costs for updates to both versions two and three of ENPC.

Curtis Cooper has held many committee, chair, and Board of Director positions for Massachusetts ENA including State Council President in 2011. She recently served as the 2015-2016 Massachusetts State Council Secretary. Curtis Cooper has represented Massachusetts state members as a vocal General Assembly delegate since 2005. Nationally, Curtis Cooper has served on Leadership and Annual Conference Committees and on the Academy of Emergency Nurses Board of Directors, including 2014 Chair.

Curtis Cooper was an Abstractor for ENA’s Scan in Emergency Nursing. Curtis She served as a reviewer for the Journal of Emergency Nursing, and is published in the Journal of Emergency Nursing, Journal of Holistic Nursing, and Pediatrics. One of her proudest contributions to emergency nursing is her eight years of service on the Board of Certification/Pediatric Nursing Certification Board Initial Exam Construction Review Board which developed the first Certification in Pediatric Emergency (CPEN) exams.

Curtis Cooper is also an active member of Sigma Theta Tau International where she has served on many committees and the Board of Directors for Alpha Chi Chapter, including President and as an international Regional Coordinator serving chapters in New England, New York, Nova Scotia, Utrecht, Netherlands, South Africa, Botswana, Ghana, and Swaziland.
