CHICAGO – August 31, 2011 – The Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) today announced that Susan Hohenhaus, MA, RN, CEN, FAEN, has been named Executive Director of the association, which represents more than 39,000 emergency department nurses in the U.S. and overseas. Hohenhaus was previously the Director of ENA’s Institute for Quality Safety and Injury Prevention, and President of Hohenhaus and Associates, a health care consulting company.
As Executive Director of ENA, she will be responsible for the effective operations of the Association and to partner with the Board of Directors and staff to promote vision, transparency and collaboration.
“Susan has played an integral role in developing our Institute for Quality, Safety and Injury Prevention, spearheading successful efforts to develop and disseminate evidence-based resources that help emergency nurses provide the highest levels of care,” said ENA President AnnMarie Papa, DNP, RN, CEN, NE-BC, FAEN. “Her dedication to advancing emergency nursing and empowering emergency nurses to improve patient care are an inspiration and will serve us all well in her new position as ENA Executive Director.”
Hohenhaus has more than 30 years’ experience as an emergency nurse. She has published numerous studies in peer-reviewed journals and has served on several councils and committees, including the National Advisory Council of the American Red Cross, the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Biodefense Advisory Group and the National Institute of Child Health and Development. She has received numerous awards and honors, including the National Emergency Medical Services for Children Heroes Award, the ENA Advanced Practice Nursing Education Scholarship and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Leadership Award. She was inducted as a Fellow of the Academy of Emergency Nursing in 2005.

Hohenhaus is a Doctoral student in Law and Policy at Northeastern University, Boston, MA. She holds a Master’s degree in Social Policy and Health Care Policy and a Bachelor of Science degree in Community Health and Human Services from Empire State College, and a Associate’s degree in Nursing from Regents College of the University of the State of New York.
