It’s an argument I’ve heard a lot covering health policy: The United States already has universal health coverage because emergency rooms are required to treat everyone who shows up in their waiting rooms.

Some Insurers Deny ER Coverage To People Who Have Been Drinking
Up to half of the people who are treated at hospital EDs and trauma centers are under the influence of alcohol, experts say.  But laws in more than half the states permit insurers to deny payment for medical services related to alcohol or drug use and that can derail hospitals’ best intentions.  Faced with the prospect of not getting paid for care, some ED personnel may sidestep the problem by simply not testing patients’ blood or urine for alcohol.

Lessons learned on violence at St. Mary
In September 2005, Charles Kunkle was paged to the St. Mary Medical Center emergency room (ER) to find that a patient had shot and killed one local police officer, and wounded another officer and one of the hospital employees.  Kunkle, R.N., director of Emergency and Trauma Services at St Mary, learned a painful lesson first hand about violence against nurses in the workplace. He has since dedicated himself to improving the situation.
